Next Generation iPhone Hardware

Just though I’d weigh in on some of the things I think we’re likely to see in the next generation iPhone (hardware-wise, since we’re going to see the software on Tuesday):

• magnetometer (so the iPhone not only knows where it is, which it does via GPS, but which direction it’s pointing)

• support for the new 3-button headphone remote (at the moment it only supports play/pause, not volume controls via the remote)

• identical form factor/size (no more smooth back, probably matte this time around for better grip, still plastic)

• better battery life (more power through efficiency)

• 16 & 32GB capacities, although I would not be surprised if it remained at 16GB only.

and pretty please,

• front-mounted camera for iChat Mobile videoconferencing

While there’s no doubt Apple will integrate some new must-have features, I think it’s important to keep in mind that the next generation iPhone will still be an iPhone; it’s not likely Apple would roll out drastic changes unless they are extremely polished (which is why, I might add, I think the video camera is highly unlikely). Think iPhone 3G vs. the original: they added more storage, 3G and GPS.

Of course, I’m only talking about iPhone here.
